Identification and Care of Photographs workshop in progress (C. Barreto, 2016)

On Sept. 13, 2016, Monique Fischer of the Northeast Document Conservation Centre (Andover, Mass.) facilitated a vernacular photography workshop at the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM). Over 30 attendees participated, including ROM staff and interns, volunteers from the Canadian Lesbian and Gay Archives, members of the Collecting Team, and grad students from OCAD U and Ryerson University. The workshop focused on the preservation of vernacular photographs, which are photographs largely taken by amateur or unknown photographers that capture everyday moments of life. The vernacular photographs that FamCam collects range from early 20th-century photographic prints to contemporary colour photographs and born-digital images. This workshop addressed the different processes that have been, and are currently, used to produce vernacular photographs, as well as the unique storage and preservation needs of each type of photographic object.
